Summary
Former President of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and professor at IMPA, Jacob Palis was a Fulbright Scholar at UC Berkeley in 1964. A leading figure in the international scientific community, his work on dynamical systems has shaped research for decades. He was the first Brazilian to win the prestigious Balzan Prize.
The Fulbright Commission and ABC established the Jacob Palis Award to honor his legacy and foster binational collaboration between promising early-career researchers in Brazil and the United States. The award supports short-term exchange visits, joint research, and the creation of sustainable Brazil-U.S. networks in science and technology.
The Award
The Fulbright Commission and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) invite Active Affiliated Members of to submit proposals in collaboration with U.S. early-career researchers based in U.S. higher education or research institutions with the objective to:
– Promote international scientific collaboration and exchange.
– Encourage transdisciplinary, high-impact research.
– Enable capacity-building and knowledge transfer between institutions.
– Create long-term research partnerships and institutional links.
Up to USD 700,000 will be allocated to ten selected projects, each receiving up to $70,000 for two years. The eligible costs include: International travel (economy airfare); Short-term stipend (per diem, from 14 to 28 days maximum); Health insurance; Other research-related expenses (e.g., research consumables, communication and dissemination materials).
The applicant must be an Active Affiliated Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC). The U.S. collaborator(s) should be: U.S. citizen based in a U.S. higher education or research institution, including those in an independent position; preference will be given to U.S. citizens without a cumulative Brazilian citizenship; Hold a Ph.D. Degree or equivalent; Actively publishing in peer-reviewed journals; and Committed to collaboration and short-term exchanges.
