What is the Fulbright All Disciplines Award in Brazil?

It is an opportunity for U.S. college or university faculty, artists, and professionals to lecture and/or conduct research in various academic and professional fields in Brazil. In addition to developing a project at a Brazilian institution, U.S. Scholars will build new connections and advance knowledge in their area.

How many awards does Fulbright Brazil offer?

We offer up to 30 awards with full maintenance benefits for the grantee. The award can total two, three, or four months long; two- or four-month awards can be split into equal segments.

What can U.S. Scholars do during their Fulbright in Brazil

  • Conduct a research project of the applicant’s choosing.
  • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses of the applicant’s choosing.
  • Conduct a professional and artistic project.

Requirements to be a U.S Fulbright Scholar in Brazil

  • Being a U.S. citizen.
  • Holding a Ph.D. or other terminal degree.
  • Presenting a letter of invitation from a Brazilian institution.
  • No Portuguese proficiency is needed.

Financial Aid

  • US$ 5,000 net monthly stipend to cover all maintenance expenses.
  • Travel allowance for one international round-trip of U$ 1,500 or US$ 2,400 for two international round-trip tickets if the scholar applies for a flex award.
  • Accident and sickness coverage

  • During the grant period, U.S. Scholars may apply for a short-term regional travel grant for activities in eligible countries of the Western Hemisphere.

Important to know before you apply

  • Brazil welcomes applicants with no previous experience in the country and at any career level: early, mid-career, and senior candidates.
  • There is no need to have advanced skills in Portuguese. In most cases, English will be sufficient.
  • Applicants can propose an appropriate host institution.
  • Award start dates can be from July 2025 through May 2026.
  • The awards can total two, three, or four months long; two- or four-month awards can be split into equal segments of 1+1 months or 2+2 months. Split awards are known as Flex Awards. For additional information, please see the Flex description below.
  • Brazilian-American dual citizens are not eligible for this award.

What is a flex award?

Flex awards allow the stay to be split into two visits of one or two months each between July 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026. There must be at least two months between the two in-country stays. Flex candidates can propose two host institutions in different parts of Brazil, one for each visit, provided that the activities in each site are part of the same project.
